Music for my video

The music i have chosen is done by a producer where he made the background beat called "Shores" i have asked him if i could record it and use it as my media video which he agreed on, me, the producer and kameron (the artist) have discussed this and kameron is currently writing's the lyrics for the song. The purpose of the song or what it is about we have not figured out yet but as it is one off his first music vidoes i will make the music video comprehend with the lyrics as there will be many metaphors as i believe these are the most popular. Grime has become big recently and is now recongised on the MOBO's so a lot of people are starting to get into to it, more of the white people are starting to get into it where before grime was seen as "black music" but now is seen as normally rave music which i beleive gets the people listening to it a lot of energy.

New Idea

Me and Kameron have discussed and decided to incorporate rap, grime and urban into one to create a unqiue hybrid to get people to listen too and start to begin to like. Kameorn is a new artist and not many people have heard off him so due to this i want to make a very unique sound that people will like and have grime flow in there similar off Skeptas and a new artist Stormzy to let people listen and begin to like Kameron as a artist.

As i said before grime has become big and more of the indie group have become recongised to listen too. Most of UK listen to the indie genre now so it is good to get a good amount of the Indie followers following the grime movement as grime is becoming more mainstream now.

The music grime has changed differently compared to in the 2000 where they used to have straightly 140bpm beats but after they went mainstream they started to make songs that they could play on the radio so they could become more known. But new artist have incorporated both high bpm music and making it mainstream so people who necessarily don't like grime will enjoy the music when played.

I would say old school grime has now become Urban grime

Sound
  • song in background pausing when rappers are talking

Blade Brown Video Analysis

Camera
  • Mostly looking up at blade brown rapper and seeing him as big in the scenery to make him seem more important, when he is talking to other looks down on them.
Mise- en- scene
  • In a exotic country smoking weed and drinking enjoying himself with girls and hot exotic country, seems rich

  • Mostly long shots and i believe it is a background put on as i saw it on the behind the scenes but some scenes were shot in a different country.
Sound
  • Song playing in the background and stopping when he is talking then carrys on.

USA Rap vs UK Grime

Usa new rap - as they old rap like 2pac and biggie has died out and the new rap is mainly a artist being a rapper rapping over a beat but usually include a singer or background singer to involve a bigger and wider audience.

Digipack

Digipacks

Digipacks are a type of CD packaging made out of card stock or other heavy paper/cardboard material. Digipacks can flip open like a book, or it can have three parts, so that one portion of the packaging opens to the right and one to the left, with the CD in the center. It covers the album or single cover so it does not look plain and artists have a choice on what to put on there.

Here is the old digipacks which this album was done in the 2000's, this is very different from the digipacks and album covers that are from today because the old digipacks mostly just have the artist on the background with the name of the album, it was very simple due to the technology being not that advanced and they did not have that much money as the artists of the present.  Tupac is posing in a way which it seems like he is thinking, this album has mainly the soul music and doesn't focus on the "gangsta"side of him and this is portrayed by the image and album cover as it is not your usual "gangster" digipack.

This is the same album cover as the 2pac one as it contains the artist being Ice Cube and what ice cube has mostly in his music videos being old school american muscle cars. He is posing like 2pac in his album cover to portray him being a "gangster" as this is what he wants people to think.

This album cover is very recent in 2013 and is done by the artist "The Game" which you can see by the top of the album cover. The album is called "Jesus peice" and this is the opposite of the other two as it doesn't contain the artist and includes a picture of what seems to see jesus with red on as this is the colour of the artists gang being the "bloods" and also jesus is wearing a "jesus peice" so this goes with the album title also. I believe the artist done this as he made a song called "jesus piece" and it was highly viewed and successful so he decided to name is the album title.

Comparison Mr Miche

The 1975 is an indie group who are leaning more to the rock side of the industry. From a first glance of a still image of the video and the name of the song being "Robbers" we assume the songs about robbers doing something. But after watching the video and listening to the lyrics i understand that it is not about robbers and more that robbers is a distraction and is a metaphor for the relationship and love between the male and female protagonist. The video does still involve robbers and them robbing things but mainly shows the buildup and aftermath of doing this, like a relationship.

Editing

Many random scenes put together to produce a fast video that makes sense and starts at the end of the video and works it way forward from then. Including flashbacks and scenes filmed at different locations put together to go with the lyrics of the song. Seems very basic and an indie video that is not "mainstream" and include other special effects like other videos. Loads of intercutting.

Camera

Camera is always focused on them two and mainly a two shot including them both to show their relationship and love. Long shots in a desert to show how alone they are and close ups to show when she is angry and when he gets shot (to show the pain)

Sound

The lyrics display in the video but the two don't sing in it like other videos just the music playing in the background while filming the female and male protagonist. You think the song ends when the male goes into to the shop to rob but after the gunshot the song carries on for one more verse (engaging the audience)

Mise en scene

Plain video no filters or effects. Filmed in an indie way so is not seen as mainstream, The clothes are very indie like and include tight trousers ripped up trousers and shirts and includes a lot off smoking to show they are sort of rock and roll and includes many scenes of sex and kissing like a rock video.Mostly dark light throughout the video with minimal lighting. when they were in that hut it was dark only small amount of light from the window showing they are very alone.

This video is different compared to the robbers but also similar, it has two protagonist that we believe are in love but this is a very mainstream video that includes special effects but not as much as other videos like katy perrys. The two protagonist going out to different places to explore and they are very much in love as we can see them making love and doing activities, the video is very fast paced and includes many inter-cutting like the robbers video.

Wiz Khalifa - We Dem Boyz Music Video

Camera
  • switches from many long shots to close up, the main shot is the medium shot so it can include most of the people in the music videos.
Mise- en- scene
  • Party theme, all singing along to the song, drinking and smoking weed (normal american rap stereotype)
Editing
  • Cuts from different parts of the party. lighting from outside
Sound
  •  lip syncing from the rapper (wiz khalifa)

I have learnt from this that most rap music videos are done with the music and both are thought of at the same time, i watched a documentary that said rappers think of a song that will have a good music video and that they can perform on stage. This is what i have to think about when my friend (Kameron) is making a beat and song, it cant be a song that will have no ideas for a music video and one that you wont be able to perform. most rap songs are upbeat like this and have a catchy line "we them boyz", but rap can be emotional like some of 2pacs song, which was classed as real rap.

Childish Gambino - 3005 music videos

Camera
  • The camera is following Gambino as he Ferris wheel
  • close up throughout

Mise- en- scene
  • Him singing while looking at camera, doesn't go with music but still looks appropriate

Editing
  • Not much lighting used, just a camera placed on his ferris wheel going around
Sound
  •  lip syncs throughout the entire video

Kayne west - Stronger

Camera
  • close up of Kayne dancing
  • Always long and mid shots throughout to show clothes and him moving

Mise- en- scene
  • Kayne moving in a party motive
  • background image moving
Editing
  • quick cutting to show different periods of time
  • Moving with the camera
  • A lot of editing is done to show quick cutting
  • paralel editing
  • Green Screen
Sound
  •  lip syncs throughout the entire video

Mr Ford

Questions

What are you making?

First i answered this question, "a music video" but after mr ford spoke to us then i changed my perception, we are making a media product to sell to our audience and to sell the song. A music video is a video telling us about the song but mainly selling the song to a audience. Ir iathe message behind the song, dreams and inpiration, emotional attatchment

I have to be a producer and a director in order to sell the music video and to make it how i want it. But i need to ask the right questions in a survey to get the right answers from my intended audience. If i don't know who my audience is then i wont be able to sell my product, if i know who my audience is then i can relate the music video towards them and find out their dislike and likes, by what im selling it needs to have an impact on my audience when they watch the music video it will make them feel in a certain way. When i watch an upbeat music video that connects with the song i relate to this and feel the way they do in the music video (happy). For example the music song "happy" when you hear this it does make you feel happy and Pharrel done a very clever music video that can relate to the song and you watch this feeling happy. If the song is depressive or angry this will also be shown in the music video as they need to sell the song and if a music video has a message behind the song you are more likely to watch a music video and listen to the song. If a song has a good music video then you are more than likely to listen and watch it again.

A music video has hidden messages behind it relating to the song but you will only be able to know this messages if you watch the music video and listen to the lyrics of the song. If you watch the music video sub consciously you will not see these hidden messages but if you watch it consciously then you will be able to decode these messages and relate back to the music video and song. I am selling my music video to a intended audience, when i film this music video i will know exactly what to put because i have asked the right questions on my survey so therefore my audience will like my product.

History of Rap

More than a century before rap exploded onto the American music scene, West African musicians were telling stories rhythmically, with just the beat of a drum for them. Meanwhile, folk artists from the Caribbean Islands were also telling stories in rhyme. Indeed, these singing poets from Africa and the Caribbean lay the foundation for modern-day American rap music.

Rapping essentially involves the speaking or chanting of rhyming lyrics, often set to a beat. The rhyming created by rappers is considered by many to be one of the most sophisticated styles of poetry. What’s more, these rhymes often address provocative subjects such as sex, violence and socio-political issues.

Rapping first gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1970s as a kind of street art, especially among African American teenagers. But it wasn’t until 1979, when the Sugarhill Gang released their breakaway hit, ‘Rapper’s Delight, that record producers took notice of this emerging musical genre. once they did, numerous rap acts, including Run-DMC and N.W.A., surfaced, and rap’s audience began to swell. It wasn’t just African American male rappers getting in on the act, either: By the 1980s, white rap bands such as the Beastie Boys and female rap bands such as Salt-n-Pepa were reaching the top of the charts.

By the 1990s, rap matured from an old-school-style – which was based on relatively simple lyrics – to a new-school-style, which was louder and included more complex lyrics. Artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg and Tupac ruled the charts during this time, as did Eminem – one of the most popular white rappers of all time.

Rap has stood the test of time and its popularity rages on with today’s artists such as 50 Cent, Ludacris and Jay-Z churning out hit after thought-provoking hit. The beat truly does go on

Codes and Conventions of Rap music vidoes

The codes and conventions of RnB/Urban are:
  • Heavy jewelry (big rings, chains, bracelets)
  • Revealing Women
  • Black/mixed race singers, rappers, background dancers etc
  • Expensive cars not the average ones
  • Guns/violence
  • Locations: the streets (ghetto life), clubs, mansions (with swimming pool)
  • The mean wear black and baggy clothes
The music video of Jason Derulo “it girl” uses the codes and conventions of RnB music, for example there’s an expensive flashy car, and the clothes he’s wearing are expensive and he’s wearing a lot of  jewelry. Also the video has a mixed race girl in it, who he is seducing him as he’s sining, which is definitely using the codes and convention.
However some of the settings in the video is different to other RnB videos, for instance the house that is used is not a typical mansion that you would expect to see it’s more posh and like a country house, also there’s a lot a tress and greenery in the video too which isn’t generally seen in this kind of genre.
50 cent ft Justin Timberlake “Ayo Technology”  is a perfect example that uses the codes and conventions of RnB/Urban music videos. The video contains expansive cars, women who are really revealing and entertaining the guys while they are sitting like“pimps” dressed up in pricey suits watching.
Rizzle Kicks “Down with the trumpets”  doesn’t use the normal codes and conventions expected to be seen in an RnB/Urban music video. For example they use a cassette player which wouldn’t be seen in a typical RnB music video because they would generally use the latest technology which would be an Ipod. Also the way they are dressed is more indie, with the skinny jeans and not the loose, baggy T-shirts or jeans that are below their bottoms. The location they have used is in a beach and not in some alley way or at a mansion with swimming pools etc. They use a twist in their video were they buy a trumpet of someone using the kind of technique that would be used when dealing drugs.
Will Smith “miami” has codes and conventions that go with the RnB genre, for example, the cars, the mixed race dancers, the girls and the clothing. However the video is has all kinds of races in it, its located in a beach and an event with a stage and live singing.

Survey

Stuart Hall and Reception Theory

Stuart hall looked at the role of audience positioning in the interpretation of mass media texts by different social groups. He came up with three different ways to read media text.

1. Dominant reading - the reader accepts fully the preferred reading, so the reader will read the text how the author wanted them to read it so it feels natural.

2. Negotiated reading - the reader partly believes the code and accepts the preferred reading, but sometimes modifies the interpretation from the media that reflects their own position, experiences and interest.

3. Oppositional reading - the readers social position places them in an oppositional relation to the dominant code they reflect the reading.

Reception Theory - is the way individuals receive and interpret a media text, it tells us about how the audience would have different interpretations from a text depending on the individual itself, so taking into account gender, age and ethnicity. For example a person aged 16 would read a text differently from a over 21 due to having different thought process and experiences. The ideology messages would be different to both people and they will both have a interpretation of a certain media text.

My chosen Brief (Music Video)

Brief 1

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, no longer than five minutes duration, together with:
  • a cover for its release as part of a digipack (CD/DVD package)
  • a magazine advertisement for the digipack (CD/DVD package)

I have chosen to do a Music video as i believe this will reach my full potential and i will not need to copyright or use anyone elses music or sound as Kameron (Artist) will make the own beat and Rap over the beat.

Sunday 7 September 2014

My Music Video

1. My first idea would be to record the person singing in a studio environment, as the songs will be contain explicit material I could make a explicit and a normal version of the music video as this is the latest things the artists are doing to allow audiences to know what they are watching. I will block out the explicit material in the normal music video by blurring them out so they cant be seen and with the explicit language I will edit it over so you do not hear any foul language. The studio setting is ideal as my friends studio is being currently built and I believe it is different and a new idea. I will be producing and helping make the beat so we do not have to copyright anything and the song will his to own. I will also edit the video to allow some of the words he says to be shown on the screen in a cartoon effect which will help improve the overall look of the music videos

Analysis of Music video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iBm60uJXvs

Here you can see the video is mostly a front view shot camera with close ups but mainly medium shots. The main idea of the video is the two singers are singing with a lot of effects going on to interest the viewer. I would say the effects are to do with the music video as the song is about drugs and alcohol and the effects are done in a way that their faces and bodys are moving. I believe it is a effective music video and looks very good due to the effects which is why i liked it as it was different to the normal music video where the singer is just singing to the song with random things going on that doesn't relate to the music at all.

If i was to do a music video i would use some effects but not like they have done in this music video as this is very advanced and would require tons of work, but i will use some of the effects they have done in their music video into a short film or a music video as i believe it is very effective.

A music video i would compare it with is still with one of the main singers Bruno mars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR6iYWJxHqs&safe=active

This music is more about emotional music and a love song so the music video will be entirely different, as you can see in the video there is a lot of close up to show the singer singing and can see the emotional on the actors face in the music video. We understand that Bruno mars is getting bullied by men as we see him getting pushed and shoved and also him pulling a piano that we don't understand till the end of the music video of him singing on a train track, which goes with the song being "il jump in front of a train for you" so this goes with the music but we understand this towards the end of the short music video
